The focus of this instruction is developing fluency and the fluency is developed through repeated readings. Once the fluency (which is developed in part through repeated readings) is developed word analysis cn take place to reinforce decoding and extend to other words. For a more detailed look at a design for using poetry in this way you may want to see my other posts here https://russonreading.blogspot.com/2020/04/fluency-practice-poems-for-repeated.html

https://russonreading.blogspot.com/2018/01/when-readers-struggle-fluency.htmlRuss Walshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01999234982751919638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4444387311759844041.post-51223748614630583852020-08-12T12:46:07.671-04:002020-08-12T12:46:07.671-04:00I very much appreciate the focus on poetry for rep...I very much appreciate the focus on poetry for repeated reading. I do have one question though. I don't understand why the information that would enhance decoding skills for students who need it would come in a discussion after the child has been asked to read the poem independently and re-read it. Would it not make more sense for there to be explicit instruction regarding blends, digraphs and vowel spellings for decoding, prior to asking children to apply those skills?
Sara P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13589466738906225398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4444387311759844041.post-30602673869630294912020-08-10T13:02:44.437-04:002020-08-10T13:02:44.437-04:00Thank you.
